GJM standpoint gets mitigated

There must be a political resolution to a political problem and for that there is the need of forbearance. This was the message from the Union Government to the four-member Gorkha Janmukti Morcha that met Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil and their meeting ended with the assurance that there would be tripartite talks if “needed” comprising the GJM, Bengal Government and the Union Government. This proved to be enough to assure the GJM leaders of the good wishes of the government at the center and this resulted in the deferment of their indefinite hill blockade till July 5.

In the meanwhile Morcha media and publicity secretary Binay Tamang confirmed of receiving a letter from Bengal Chief Minister of welcoming its decision to send emissaries to Calcutta for talks in the forthcoming Friday. Now, the reason for the softening stand of Morcha may be their realization of the impasse over the Indo-US nuclear deal that has forced the central leadership to spend sleepless nights. On the other hand, it is true, the strange situation of Sikkim has prompted the Center to take immediate steps to end this problem at the earliest.

It should be remembered that tourism is the main business and source of occupation for Sikkim and the Morcha supporters’ acts of blocking NH31A, the Himalayan state’s lifeline, may make the state’s panoptic prospect of business face an abrupt end for this year.

Though the GJM leadership has already presented their demand of statehood for “Darjeeling district and contiguous areas in the Dooars” and also handed over a map of their proposed Gorkhaland to the central leadership, it is difficult to ascertain any glorious prospect of this. The reason is none of the union, opposition and state leaderships is favoring this since this may give rise to an array of similar demands of statehood throughout the country.
